Meet Jessica Renwick: Author of the Starfell Series

Tell us about your books
The first book of my award-winning Starfell series was published in 2018. This is a fantasy series for middle-grade kids and follows twelve-year-old Fable on her journey to Starfell, meeting new friends, discovering the mysteries of her past, and embracing her magic. I love unique magical creatures and these books have everything from a talking, fire-breathing chicken to winged-horses to dragons. The fourth book, The Curse of the Warlock, is coming out March 29.

Which books did you enjoy growing up?
As a kid, I loved The Chronicles of Narnia and The Hobbit. I still do! I was also lucky enough to grow up around horses, so I loved horse books like Black Beauty and The Saddle Club series too.

Tell us about your pets
We have two dogs who we love dearly! Lucy is a fourteen-year-old shih tzu mix who I have had since she was a puppy. She has one blue eye and a spunky attitude! Vader is our two-year-old poodle who is the biggest cuddle bug. We also have a small flock of chickens (who are pets, not food!) and they’re all pretty tame and like people (and treats!).

Where is your favorite place to read?
My favourite place to read is on our deck in the summer. We have a cozy canopy and living area out there with tons of flower planters and hanging lights.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing I like to walk our city trails with the dogs, hike, mushroom hunt, camp, play cozy video games like Stardew Valley, and of course, read.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be an author or a veterinarian. I wrote my first novel at thirteen and my mom even helped me print it off and send to a publishing house. They sent me a really nice rejection letter that just my fire to keep writing.

What is a writing tip for aspiring authors?
Patience! Writing a book and building a readership is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time to improve your craft and get the word out there. If you’re persistent, it will come.
